The Local Ones

Ava was something of an intelligent punk in her Poway community. She was a straight-A student, but behind all that was a seventeen-year-old girl who would skateboard with friends of all genders and identities every weekend at the local beach skate park, showing off their tricks to the locals like a traveling show. Ava was always on top with her insane street lamp trick, where she'd flip off and on the two posts; one with the light, one with the street sign. It never failed her, until it did one Friday in July. Her best friend nicknamed Boxy was watching the spectacle amid the sunset when she noticed the sky was turning purple way too fast. By the time she realized it, the sunset was gone and the sky turned to night. Nervous, she yelled, "Ay rebel girl! C'mon!" as Ava seemed to finish the trick. Ava, however, could only hear the wind. Then some lights flashed in the sky, which got everyone's attention. "The lifeforms are here!" a male bystander shouted, and some others did the same. Everyone ran to the parking lot for safety from these lights, which were coming down in a strong gust of wind. Ava couldn't be bothered as she continued the trick. Boxy, fending off the wind, quickly saw that the lights took a shape, that of a disk. When asked for a description of the aircraft, she said, "It looked like that X-Files poster. Ya know the one? 'I Want To Believe'? Yeah, I used to think I wanted to because Ava would take me and some others to find aliens. I took it as a joke since I didn't think 'Aliens Exist' as she'd say. Now I realize: Ava was right." Boxy, as loud as she could, screamed, "AVA! GET OFF THE STREET LIGHT! DO IT FOR ME NOW!", all while getting sand in her mouth. Ava barely heard it, but didn't understand anything. She then felt her hands slip off the post and fell hard on the ledge. At least that's what Boxy saw. She actually was suspended an inch above the ledge, her blonde, teal, and pink hair barely touching the walkway as her black skateboard glided down. She looked up and saw the lights, coming on her like a spotlight on a stage. "I must be losing my mind," she thought, "oh God I'm losing my mind." Boxy saw her being lifted up by the light and into the aircraft, crying at the sight of her best friend being taken by this thing. Ava turned her head and saw her friend looking up at her, her neon blue hair lighting the surroundings. She gives a reassuring smile in her direction, which Boxy could see. The last that Boxy saw was the ship audio saying, "Welcome to the I-Empire." as Ava yelled her final words in euphoria, "EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING'S MAGIC!" The ship's light went out and left in the wind gust, leaving Boxy covered in sand and with her best friend's skateboard.

To this day, Ava's presence haunts the skate park. The park was dedicated in her honor and the trick she did became official. Every year on the day she was abducted, Boxy would always play the cassette Ava left for her as her friends did their tricks. The skateboard Ava left was put in a nearby museum along with some of her things. Legend has it that at night, her laughter could be heard from the walkway near the ledge she floated above and a voice, her voice, sang in a whisper-like way,

"Save your breath, I'm nearly

Bored to death and fading fast

Life is too short to last long

Back on earth, I'm broken

Lost and cold and fading fast

Life is too short to last long"
