Mary was born in Aynho, Northamptonshire which is located in the UK. She grew up with four siblings and was the second youngest out of all of them. Her family was religious and would attend church often.

Mary attended many different schools throughout her childhood. She loved history before she realized she loved math even more. She graduated from St. Hugh’s College, Oxford with a first class degree.

Cartwright faced many obstacles during her education, women were overlooked which made it difficult for her to pursue her dreams in mathematics. Even through all this she was able to contribute to math greatly.

The Cartwright Theorum, now known as the Chaos Theory was founded by Mary Cartwright herself along with a former peer. This theory is still being used today, everyday, and helps us with the weather system.
