The Bad History of Tilikum

Sea World has been around since March 15, 1959, so for about 60 years. Since then, there have been lots of things that had happened and lots of things that happened in their old parks. First off, let's talk about Tilikum, One of the largest whales to be held captive. Tilikum is an orca whale who had spent most of his life in Sea World Orlando, performing. On February 20, 1991, Keltie Byrneis 21-year-old marine biology student who worked part-time as a Sea Land of the Pacific trainer(Sealand of the Pacific was a public aquarium in South Oak Bay at The Oak Bay Marina but today the park is shut down since November of 1992, so basically the past sea world) Keltie slipped and fell into the pool containing Tilikum, Haida II, and Nootka IV (two other whales) since the whales were very stressed and angry with trainers of the park (since performing is a torture for some)the three orcas submerged her, dragging her around the pool and preventing her from surfacing. At one point, she reached the side and tried to climb out, but the orcas pulled her back into the pool, all the other trainers did was throw her a life-ring....that's great help. Sadly, she surfaced three times before drowning, and it was several hours before her body could be recovered from the pool. After that, they moved Tilikum to Sea World Orlando Florida on January 9, 1992, and sea-land of the pacific shut down right after. Though, this next one is sorta the victim's fault, in my opinion, a bad decision he made. On July 6, 1999, a 27-year-old man, Daniel P. Dukes, was found dead over Tilikum's back in his sleeping pool...Daniel had stayed after hours of the park and snuck in the pool and evaded security to enter the orca tank unclothed (ew) since the orca felt insecure, he attacked the man and he died from drowning. This next victim is the saddest in my opinion. On February 24, 2010, Tilikum killed Dawn Brancheau, a 40-year-old trainer. Dawn was rubbing Tilikum as part of a post-show routine when the orca grabbed her by her ponytail and pulled her into the water. As she was doing this, there was a crowd watching, and she died of drowning and blunt force trauma. Poor kids, they saw and witnessed that. Then Tilikum did die on January 6, 2017, SeaWorld announced that Tilikum had died early in the morning and that the cause of death was bacterial infection, RIP.
