The coronavirus or Covid-19 for short is a virus that can get you the Flu or can kill you. The virus has killed 2,384 people in the United States. Old people are more at risk due to them being old and not being able to handle the flu. Some of the symptoms of Covid-19 are Having a fever, having a cough, and shortness of breath.

Why is this event/issue newsworthy (why would people care about this?) 

People would care because they could be in danger from the virus because they could die or get the flu.
