Why is Mario so short 

This is so outta pocket but I am sitting right now watching my brother play Super Mario Brothers, and I can’t help but notice how short he is. Now my question is why ??
Not just Mario but also everyone in the game except for Peach and Luigi. I don’t know just a random thought. Any conspiracies for this?..
