The Winchester House
The Winchester house is a work of art and historical site in San Jose, California that was formerly Sarah Winchester's personal residence. She was the widow of William Winchester and the heir to an important part of the Winchester fortune. Sarah experienced tragedy when her infant daughter passed away from a childhood ailment and her husband left her due to tuberculosis a few years later. Sarah moved from their New Haven, Connecticut, home to San Jose, California, not long after her husband passed away. She made a purchase of an eight-room farmhouse there and started what is undoubtedly the world's longest home renovation, which was only completed when Sarah passed away on September 5,1922.From 1886 to 1922 construction seemingly never ceased as the original eight-room farmhouse grew into the world’s most unusual and sprawling mansion, featuring: 24,000 square feet,10,000 windows,2,000 doors,160 rooms.52 skylights, 47 stairways and fireplaces,17 chimneys,13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens all this was built at a price tag of the $5 million dollars in 1923 or $71 million today. But it is indeed unclear what was left. Rumors of a "mystery house" being constructed by an eccentric and affluent woman were circulating even before her death. Was a psychic telling her to create this house? We're the victims of the "Gun that Won the West" haunting her? Honestly, did construction never end? What drove a well-educated socialite to isolate herself from the outside world and devote practically all of her time to creating the most stunning yet weird mansion? They say that her home was made on a spiritual lines and that she was able to talk to spirits and they told her what to build and she thought that something bad would happen to her if she stopped building. Sarah Winchester was an independent, driven, and courageous lady who has become legendary. And the mansion she created is recognized across the world for its numerous design innovations and eccentricities, many of which were far-reaching for their time. It is also said to be home to ghostly activity. Since the doors opened on June 30, 1923, these puzzles and others have attracted over 12 million visitors to the Winchester Mystery House
