There's been a lot of talk in the gaming community, specifically the Nintendo community, about the next system. Will it be similar to the now 7 year old Switch? Will it be completely different from a handheld? And what will Nintendo name it? Join me as I try to answer all these questions and more.
As of now, there has been no official statement from Nintendo themselves, but leaks have come out that they are working hard behind the scenes. According to Polygon, the new system will be a hybrid handheld console like the Switch, and that means it "would be able to be used in portable mode, similar to the Nintendo Switch." The system might also be a little bigger as a 2024 Japanese analyst's report (which this article refers to) suggests the new system will have an 8-in screen. That's way 1 inch bigger than the OLED screen and 1.8 inches more than the normal Switch! One big question is if the system will be "backward-compatible", or in layman's terms, your DS games are playable on the 3DS. That's what backwards compatible means. The article says it's unclear, but seeing that has been the case for the past few systems, we can expect this. The expected release date seems to be March 2025, around the original Switch's 8th birthday. There is more to cover, but these are more of the main points that I wanted to cover. I'll link the article below for your reading entertainment.
Now with the basic information out of the way, what are they naming this thing?! It seems like there isn't much on the name, but my buddy Pat of NintenTalk made a really funny short about an intern getting asked by Nintendo Headquarters for the system's name. Some names given include Nintendo Switch 2 and after some thought, Nintendo Switch U, which promptly causes Pat as Headquarters to back out of the room saying no. It made me crack up and just goes to show how naming this system will not only be hard, but a very important decision. It'll also be linked below. Right now the name the community has been using is Switch 2, but we just have to wait for an official statement. This is an exciting moment, and you bet that we'll be grabbing a system when it releases!
